“Stars and Watercarriers” is the fourth in our series of free bike training videos that are perfect for turbo training workouts.

Directed by danish film maker Jørgen Leth, Stars and Watercarriers tells the story of the 1973 Giro d’Italia with the same aesthetically pleasing style that won Jørgen Leth such acclaim for his other classic cycling film “A Sunday in Hell“.
Your Turbo Training Workouts
At 90 minutes long Stars and Watercarriers would work well as two 45 minute workouts;
Session 1: Isolated Leg Training – 45 Minutes
Session Goal: The goal of this session is to improve pedalling technique.
Set up: Place a chair or stool on either side of your turbo trainer to rest the non working leg. As usual get a towel and water bottle set up before you start.
Warm Up:
- 5:00 Pedal smoothly at 90rpm
- 5:00 Alternate :30 standing :30 seated
- 5:00 Pedal smoothly at 90rpm
Main Set:
- 5 x 3:00
- 1:00 left leg only
- 1:00 both legs
- 1:00 right leg only
- 2:00 Rest Interval
- Repeat x 4 for a 25 minute main set
Cool Down:
- 5:00 progressively easier gear finishing in easiest gear, maintain 90rpm
Bike Training Video 4: Stars and Watercarriers
Session 2: High Cadence Cycling – 45 minutes
Session Goal: The goal of this session is to improve pedalling efficiency through increasing cadence whilst maintaining good pedalling form.
Set up: You’ll need a cadence enabled bike computer for this session. As usual get a towel and water bottle set up before you start.
Warm Up:
- 5:00 Pedal smoothly at 90rpm
- 5:00 Seated alternate 80% of work effort from right to left let every 1:00 minute, start with weakest leg
Main Set:
- 3 x 5:00
- 3:00 Hold cadence at 100rpm without bouncing at high effort
- 2:00 Lower cadence to 80rpm with easy effort
- 1:00 High cadence between 110-120rpm focussed on good form at moderate effort
- 5:00 Rest Interval
- Repeat x 2 for a 30 minute main set
Cool Down:
- 5:00 progressively easier gear finishing in easiest gear, maintain 90rpm
